The Four Agreements Are Powerful Principles We Can Implement To Live Our Lives, Better Our Associations With Others, And Boost Our Satisfaction.
Do You know the book The Four Agreements? The Four Agreements by Ruiz are highly effective concepts we can take advantage of to live our lives, improve our bonds with others, and promote our happiness and overall health.
Here are Ruiz's The Four Agreements.
The First Agreement: Always be Impeccable With Your Word.
This means shunning rumors, lies, empty assurances and other behaviors we bring about predicaments with our words. Speak only what you mean to say, and take into account that you can trigger damage if you're not conscientious with each remark you state.
This is a remarkable recommendation. Many folks don't understand the capability of their words and see the problem that can be produced with speaking recklessly, thoughtlessly or aggressively. Nearly all of us are conscious that screaming at someone may be uncomfortable to them, but indirect little digs at them, or gossip at their backs, can hurt others more than we know, and in damaging them, we harm ourselves.
The Second Agreement: Don't Take Anything Personally.
This 'agreement' is concerned with getting familiar with how other people's attitudes are a mirror of them only. Whenever an individual gives us opinions about us, it's helpful to remember that no feedbacks are absolutely objective; we all hold our biases, 'filters' through which we view the world, and the like. From this, we should not take anyone else's opinion of us or our actions as totally true; whenever an individual says something about us (or anything else), they're just saying a thing about themselves and how they view the world.
This is fantastic guide for making us feel better, but take it with a grain of salt. Even as everyone has their biases and there is no such thing as true objectivity, by not taking a thing personally, people can really limit their ability to recognize their own undesirable patterns and biased thinking, and work on forming more healthy patterns and clear-sighted thinking.
The Third Agreement: Don't Make Assumptions.
A great deal of stress is established when people assume they can read what other people are thinking without verifying with them. Comprehending that other individuals might have unique motivations for their actions, even drastically varying world views, and keeping in mind to really try to understand other people and talk over these motivations before jumping to conclusions concerning their behavior, can go a long way toward discouraging interpersonal conflict.
Nevertheless, taking this recommendation to an extreme may cause people to ignore their intuition about people, or common sense on a person's behavior that's damaging. It can also open people up to manipulation whenever they train themselves to believe a person's explanation of bad behavior rather than judging the behavior on its own. (Example: not 'assuming' they're being cheated on if their spouse is showing erratic behavior and the usual hints of infidelity, but vehemently denies wrongdoing.) This one is a helpful suggestion, but should be tempered by common sense and inner wisdom.
The Fourth Agreement: Always Do Your Best.
By this, Ruiz implies to do the best you can at any given time, and you'll never have regrets. On certain days, your best isn't as good as other days, and that is alright. As long as you put honest attempt into life, you will have nothing to be ashamed of, and will not 'beat yourself up' over a less-than-stellar execution in retrospect.
